Bareilly: Two women and three girls -- aged 12, 15 and 16 -- were killed and over 20 people injured, including nine critically, after a tractor-trolley carrying around 50 villagers to a religious event overturned in Padhwa area of Lakhimpur Kheri on Thursday afternoon.
The accident took place when the driver of the tractor -- with two trolleys attached -- lost control of the vehicle. It overturned, trapping people under the trolleys.
The injured were taken to the nearest community health centre, while one of them was shifted to Lucknow for further medical attention.
Police said the tractor-trolley was travelling from Sohariya village to Karikot temple in Bahraich’s Sujauli area to attend a ‘mundan’ (head shaving) ritual when the tragedy struck.
DM Anjani Kumar said, “It seemed the incident happened after two trolleys were added to the tractor.”
Those dead were identified as Aarushi (12), Nancy (15), Panchhi (16), Raj Kumari (40), and Makhana (45).
